Strasbourg: magnificent and picturesque

Europe Vacation 2024 Part 1: Benefits of the Schengen Zone

One of the coolest differences between North America and Europe is how easily you can travel from one country to another. During the first week of June, I took a day trip from Stuttgart, Germany, to Strasbourg, France. We were in the city in roughly two hours. I was told to bring my passport, but I never had to take it out, not even once! The benefits of the Schengen Zone!

Strasbourg is a magnificent and picturesque city with a rich history. My American-in-Germany family and I drove there and parked in a tight parking garage with four levels but no elevator. We walked to a cafe in front of the Notre Dame Cathedral of Strasbourg. The view was beautiful, but the crepe was just alright. We then walked around the city for about two hours before going wine tasting at a sophisticated yet chill wine bar. I ordered a virgin mojito, which was one of the best I’ve ever had and enjoyed an endless supply of olives throughout the tasting.

Strasbourg’s charm lies in its blend of French and German influences, reflected in its architecture and cuisine. The city’s medieval center, with its half-timbered houses and winding alleys, is a delight to explore. We visited the historic district of La Petite France, known for its quaint canals and cobblestone streets.

In the evening, we went on a boat tour of the canal and got to see Strasbourg from the water. Here’s what I learned: Strasbourg has a significant war history, having been passed back and forth between France and Germany. The European Union parliament headquarters is located here, and the city has the second-largest student population in France after Paris. An interesting fact I learned is that syphilis was rampant here during World War II, causing people to go crazy!

The boat tour was cozy and informative, but I was struggling to keep my eyes open because I was full, a bit tired, and a little too warm. After the tour, we went to another cafe for dinner. I had a traditional Alsatian dish, tarte flambée, which is similar to a thin pizza topped with cream, onions, and bacon. It was delicious and the perfect end to a delightful day.

Overall, it was a 10/10 experience! Strasbourg is a city that perfectly encapsulates the charm and history of Europe.
