Being a third culture kid
I am Bertha Nibigira, also known as Berita. I am a Third Culture Kid. My journey has taken me across continents and through diverse cultures. While I hail from Burundi, I first drew breath in the Democratic Republic of Congo and spent my formative years in Tanzania as a refugee. During my teenage years, my family relocated to the United States. This patchwork of early exposure to different cultural experiences has woven a rich tapestry of understanding within me, shaping me into the Third Culture Kid, also known as the Global Citizen, I am today.
Simply put, A Third Culture Kid is an individual that was raised in a culture that’s not of her/his parents. She or he lives and operates within a third culture. TCKs are also known as Global Citizens.
Academic journey
Throughout my life, I’ve been fortunate to engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds and life circumstances. This exposure has instilled in me a profound appreciation for cultural diversity and linguistic richness. Alongside English, I speak Kirundi, Swahili, and French at varying levels.
Today, I am a Peacebuilder. A Refugee Advocate. A Cultural Diplomat.
In all my endeavors, whether through academia, poetry, or blogging, I strive to inspire others to embrace their unique identities and reach their fullest potential. I believe that by fostering deep understanding and connection, we can build a more harmonious, peaceful, and equitable interconnected world.

I have been commissioned to write poems for: the Ambassador of Burundi, the American University of Public Affairs, and the French Embassy. I have also performed as a youth refugee voice for the Collaborative on Global Children’s Issues at Georgetown University. Igihe, Rwanda’s national and global media house, recorded my most recent work at Rwanda Day attended by President Paul Kagame. Last but not least, I recently single-handedly organized and hosted a poetry show in honor of International Peace Day 2024, it was an incredible show.
