Raison D’être: Art of Self Affirmation

By Berita Nibigira

I still want to be this woman when I grow up!

I vow to spend a lifetime learning how

to bring out her best version

undefined by men

but guided by her Creator!

Fully aware of her past and present,

pain and fear,

mistakes and regrets,

doubts and distrust,

shortcomings and dejections,

she is still the one I want to be.

Her relentlessness,

resilience, and

resourcefulness

are inspiring and fill me with so much hope!

Her pliable spirit,

ready to acknowledge human frailty,

willing to accept redemption and its responsibility,

is a powerful language

taught by Unseen Beings,

but woefully understood and spoken by a few.

Daily reminded of the unforgiving circumstances of her pedigree,

shadowed by meager birth rights,

she has accepted the maim-ness of societies,

but is filled with hope as she labores from dawn to dusk

to metamorphose into an astonishment.

She is propelled by her faith,

while trusting in divine intervention,

relying on her raison d’être.

Be blessed the many staircases

she shall climb

to reach greater heights.

Considering all,

still, I want to be her when I grow up.

I vow to spend a lifetime learning how

to bring out her best version,

undefined by men,

but guided by her Creator!
