Hypocrisy of Eye

By Berita Nibigira

I say I want to help people,

but when I look deep within myself,

I see a lack of sensitivity toward other people’s needs.

I say I want to be a better human,

but find myself envying the ill-gotten success of my fellow humans.

I say I want to be nothing like them,

but ingeniously do and act exactly like them.

I say I want to be the change in my community,

but run away from my family the minute they inconveniently need my help.

I say I want to change the world,

but fail to change the personal habits that contribute to the current state of the world.

I say I want to help eradicate poverty,

but pretend to be deaf and blind when I encounter a homeless human.

I say I want to be forgiven for my sins,

but zealously condemn those who sin differently.

I say I want to be freed from my sin,

but scorn those publicly struggling with sin.

I say I want to love others,

but crucify them the minute their beliefs and opinions differ from mine.

I say I want to help people,

but when I look deep within myself,

I see a lack of sensitivity toward other people’s needs.
